US problems are not in the "margin"
The US problems are not problems in the margin but rather the lack of development of an infrastructure of any sort. I assure you there are more stakeholders primarily working not to lose out on their "piece of the action" than you can possibly begin to count. Incentives when they exist often times are perverse, counter intuitive and conflict with what is in the patient's best interest.
In both the Canadian and UK health system there is a pretty vibrant private sector sub-market. I can't defend or address all the issues involved with the problems in those countries but on the whole their problems appears to issues "out in the margins" where you find silly examples of things like long lines for required service. Much of the long wait stuff involves elective types of things that patients want versus require. Not always the case but it is often.
I have arrived at the point where I believe we need lots of attention on this subject so we can get some improvement. We have barely seen the problems with the health care system yet; wait until all the boomers start hitting the boards demanding their health care goodies. Our healthcare stats on many important public health status measures are dreadful and all of this has us spending almost 16% of our county's GDP for healthcare costs."I believe our system of checks and balances will require a lot of compromise through the process so I don't worry about what we will end up with in the end. What is clear is we can't continue what we are doing now."
Each of the Candidates have a position paper about Health Care; Patients Taking Control will read and review them all.
